Week 9 Power Rankings

Despite the Steelers' abysmal fourth quarter, they hang on to the third spot, although they lose their grip slightly, as Washington is coming on strong. This week's game in D.C. is going to be huge for them.

Biggest Rise: Baltimore [*shudder*] (13 to 8)

Biggest Drop: Buffalo (6 to 11)
Atlanta (12 to 17)

Your Slightly Trashed Steelers -- Giants Recap

Welcome, mothers and fuckers, to the Ben Roethlisberger show. If you've been around since Tommy "Gun" Maddox went down in '04 with "an elbow" you know what to expect by now. Some truly breathtaking plays coupled with some super huge boners. Some games, he gets away with everything (Baltimore, Jacksonville), and some games it just does not happen. Today it just did not happen. Certainly having Number Ten out with "a weed possession charge pending" did not help, but the way things went today I'm not convinced his presence would have been that much of a difference. Nate Washington had a decent game, Hines made some solid catches, and Limas Sweed finally got a chance to show what he can do, and it wasn't all that bad. But there were just too many offensive screw-ups. Clearly a large part of it is Ben's faul, but fuck it -- I'm not blaming Ben. Sure, some of it is his fault. Yeah, he chose to have his worst game this season today, but he did just enough to win only to have it negated by asinine penalties on Willie Colon (holding on Nate Washington's would-be second touchdown of the game which would have made it 21-9) and Chris Kemoeatau (late hit costing the Steelers crucial field position after a huge third down conversion).

And at some point you just can't continue to be expected to overcome injuries. Tomlin said earlier this week that " . . . great teams overcome injuries," but Christ, they nearly lost their second punter this season along with their long snapper. Who the fuck does this ever happen to? Add that to the injuries that Deshea Townsend and Ryan Clark suffered, and a point is reached where there is just no way you can continue to be competitive with that many key players gone. And yes a long-snapper is evidentely a key player. You can choose to blame James Harrison if you want for that shitty snap over Berger's head, but if you choose to do so you are an idiot, because there is just no way you can reasonably expect a linebacker to successfully fill a position that is so specialized that teams reserve a place on their roster just for it. You might as well have asked Chris Hoke to boot a 40 yard field goal. It's not going to happen.

We heard a lot this week about how this game pitted two very similar teams -- hard-nosed defenses, strong ground attacks, and efficient young quarterbacks rounding into their respective primes. We were told that the winner of this game would out-muscle the other team and beat them at their own game. After this game we'll hear a lot about how great the Giants are, how mature Eli is, and how the Giants are the best team in the NFL. What actually happend was Ben played uncharacteristically shitty, and the Steelers' defense played their best game of the season (especially when you consider they spend so much time on the field in the first half, had that insane goal-line stand, and didn't allow a touchdown until the 4th quarter, after they saw the wheels come off the rest of the team), but there were just too many injuries for them to pull the game out.

Yeah, I'm upset we lost, but I'm not upset about what I saw. Ben has done enough over the past four+ years for me to give him a pass on this one, and the defense confirmed my suspicion that they are just filthy nasty. I can't imagine another game going as badly for the Steelers as this one did, and they still should have won it. Their schedule is insanely brutal the rest of the way, and they find themselves only one game ahead of the Ravens, and I'm not worried about them. Their good, and if they can get even a litte bit healthier they're going to be scary good. This loss will stick with them, but I think Tomlin is good at getting the Steelers to bounce back from crappy games. In Tomlin's 23 games as Steelers' coach, they've only lost back-to-back games once. They'll be pissed all week, and they should be. But they're still 5-2, and the division is in their hands. It's time to regroup and bring this shit up a notch, because it only gets harder from here.

It's hard to be afraid of a team who starts Kerry "I am rated below J.T. O'Sullivan" Collins, but they can run and play defense like no other.

2

2

5-1

.7404

They have played the weakest schedule in the league to this point. We'll see how for real they are when they go to Pittsburgh this week.

3

3

The Cincy game was closer than it should have been late in the 3rd quarter. Let's call it bye-week rust. Please?

4

.6776

Lurking...with a better than average D and a sneaky-efficient offense.

5

7

5-2

.6576

I don't know much about these guys, but two of their next three are very winnable, after that, good luck.

6

9

5-1

.6521

Also have played an easy schedule. And suddenly they have New England breathing down their backs.

7

8

5-2

.6422

Jason Campbell has not thrown an interception this season. I can't wait for next Monday night when the Steelers go do DC.

8

6

4-2

.6256

Believe it. Ken Whisenhunt is a good coach. Or he's at least competent enough to know how to use all the offensive weapons he has.

9

10

3-3

.6161

Because (and ONLY because) Zhi is such a huge Phillies fan, I'll root for them in the World Series. But I'm not happy about it.

10

12

4-3

.5767

Apparently Kyle Orton can make some throws. But, remember, this is Kyle Orton. And if you saw some of those throws, they were speculative at best.

11

4

4-3

.5764

Truly amazing drop. I think we're learning just how important it is to have an above-average quarterback in the NFL

12

13

4-2

.5728

Matty Ice-Roddy White has become the hot new QB-WR hookup. I have to believe having someone like White will help expedite the Iceman's development.

13

18

3-3

.5649

Baltimore gets Oakland, Cleveland, and Houston the next 3 weeks while the Steelers get the Giants, Redskins, and Colts. I'm not saying. I'm just saying.

14

23

4-2

.5541

Just don't get too excited about Matt Cassel. He was throwing against one of the worst pass defenses in the league this year.

15

20

4-3

.5498

Huge win against the Colts. Rogers is proving to be more than competent, but I feel like Favre's presence accounted for at least 3 wins a year in Green Bay

16

11

3-4

.5424

The best offense in the NFL and they've only got 3 wins. I'm not convinced they can beat the Buccaneers without a beter defense.

17

14

3-4

.5108

Have they forgotten Daunte Culpepper is sitting around, waiting for a phone call? You don't think he'd be better than Tavaris Jackson or Brad Johnson? And he's a former Viking. The fans would eat that up. I don't know what the hold up is.

18

21

3-3

.5071

I wonder if Garrard really is the answer for them.

19

17

3-3

.5010

I never bought into the idea that Favre joining this team was enough to make them a playoff contender, and I stand by that even with the Pats scrambling for a quarterback.

20

19

3-4

.4974

There is just no reason why a team with Rivers, Tomlinson, Chambers, and Gates is 3-4 in the AFC West. Fire Norv.

21

16

3-3

.4898

21-42, 299 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT. That was not Jim Sorgi last week, Colts fans. That was Peyton.

22

22

2-4

.4859

Definitely an improvement over last year.

23

15

4-3

.4667

Cutler played most of this game, but was clearly not 100 percent. That said, when you give up over 40 points it probably doesn't matter how healthy your QB is.

24

26

2-4

.4167

Surging. But no way they catch the Titans. However, the wild card could come out of their division.

25

24

2-4

.4127

I was really scared that these guys were going to swoop in and grab the AFC North this year. Not so much.

26

25

2-5

.3628

The firing of Mike Nolan was met with regretful acceptance around here. He was in over his head. But not as far in over his head as the York family who owns the Niners.

27

27

2-4

.3470

Tom Cable, baby! I've been saying it all year.

28

28

1-5

.2710

The only reason they're this high up is because their defense is moderately competent. But to be 1-5 in the AFC West is almost scary.

29

31

2-4

.2691

Good for them. Those were two great wins over two upper-eschelon teams. Don't look now, but they're only 2 games back in the NFC West.

30

29

0-7

.2276

We need to create a word that encompasses just how bad this team is. I had them going 5-11, which would require them to finish 5-4 from here in. Yikes.

31

30

1-5

.2176

Week one they nearly beat the Patriots. That seems like a different season now.

32

320-6.1246
On their way to joining the Bungles at 0-7
